Construction and Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (“EPCC”) specialist, Sarawak Consolidated Industries Berhad (“SCIB” or the “Company”), today announced the appointment of its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michael Tan Thian Zhi, as Executive Director of the Company, strengthening the Group’s leadership bench as it sharpens its focus on construction and infrastructure opportunities across Sabah and Sarawak.

Mr. Michael Tan brings with him a multidisciplinary background that combines engineering expertise, project execution experience and strategic management capabilities. He holds a Master of Science in Management from Imperial College London and a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering from University College London. He is also a Registered Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.
Following his appointment as Chief Executive Officer on 29 May 2026, Mr. Michael Tan has now also been appointed to the Board as Executive Director. His appointment comes at an important phase for SCIB as the Group continues to transition into a more focused Construction and EPCC-driven company, following recent corporate realignment initiatives and its ongoing efforts to rebuild its project pipeline, expand its order book and strengthen its tender book.
Mr. Michael Tan began his career as a Geotechnical Engineer with Borneo Highway PDP Sdn. Bhd., the Project Delivery Partner for the Pan Borneo Highway Sabah, before advancing into leadership roles within established construction companies. With experience spanning infrastructure project execution, business development, operational leadership and financial management, he brings a strong combination of technical expertise and strategic management capabilities to SCIB.

Non-Independent Non-Executive Chairman Datuk Chong Loong Men commented, “We are pleased to welcome Mr. Michael Tan to the Board as Executive Director. His technical foundation in civil engineering, experience in major infrastructure projects and management exposure within the construction sector will be valuable as SCIB continues to strengthen its Construction and EPCC capabilities.”
He added, “SCIB is entering a new phase where project execution, tender competitiveness and operational discipline will be critical. With Mr. Michael Tan’s experience in infrastructure delivery and contractor-side management, we are confident that he will contribute meaningfully to our efforts to expand our order book and tender book, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak where infrastructure development remains active.”
As at 31 May 2026, SCIB’s outstanding order book amounted to approximately RM130.93 million across Sabah, Sarawak and West Malaysia, while its tender book stood at approximately RM1.14 billion. We believe Mr. Michael Tan’s appointment will further strengthen our ability to convert this healthy pipeline into secured projects while enhancing execution capabilities across our growing Construction and EPCC portfolio.
Additionally, SCIB has continued to pursue opportunities within East Malaysia’s infrastructure and public development landscape. The Company recently secured a RM32.78 million EPCC contract for the construction of SMK Balaban Jaya in Beluran, Sabah, comprising 18 classrooms and related facilities.
The Company believes that Mr. Michael Tan’s familiarity with infrastructure execution, technical project coordination and business development will enhance SCIB’s ability to evaluate, tender for and deliver projects more effectively. His appointment is expected to support the Company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its project pipeline, improve execution standards and position SCIB for sustainable long-term growth.
Mr. Michael Tan Thian Zhi, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of SCIB said, “I am honoured to join SCIB at this important stage of its transformation journey. The Company has a meaningful platform in Construction and EPCC, particularly in East Malaysia, and I look forward to working closely with the Board and management team to enhance project execution, strengthen tender participation and support the Company’s long-term growth objectives.”
Looking ahead, SCIB remains focused on disciplined project selection, effective cost management and the expansion of its Construction and EPCC activities. With stronger leadership support and a clearer operational focus, the Company is confident in its ability to pursue new infrastructure and construction opportunities across Malaysia, with particular emphasis on Sabah and Sarawak.
